Seine Karriere als Sänger begann beim Talentschuppen auf der Funkausstellung 1971 in Berlin.

Am 20. Januar 1973 stellte er in der ZDF-Hitparade das Lied Der Junge mit der Mundharmonika vor, mit dem ihm sein erster Nr.1-Hit gelang. Insgesamt verkaufte er über 10 Millionen Tonträger.

Clüver starb 2011 an den Folgen schwerer Verletzungen, die er sich beim Sturz von einer Treppe seiner Finca auf Mallorca zugezogen hatte. Am 19. August 2011 wurde seine Urne in der Nordsee beigesetzt.
